America goes to war

Getting
Into WWII
getting
Out of WWII
Myths about America and the Second World War abound. Even in my youth, only a few years after the end of the war, many an untrue story was believed.

For example:

Carrot juice will make you see better.

The war started 7 December, 1941.

America was totally unprepared for the the war.

FDR knew about the coming attack on Pearl Harbor.

Japan's major objective on Dec 7 was to attack Pearl harbor.

+ Carrot juice will make you see better. (This story caused my color blind cousin to drink gallons of the stuff.  In reality the story was put out by the British to explain away the fact that their pilots were able to make interceptions in all kinds of weather.  The real secret to their success was English Radar, not carrot juice.)

+The war started 7 December, 1941. --  The war did not begin 7 December, 1941. England and France had been fighting with Germany and Italy from Sep. 1939.  Italy had invaded Ethiopia, and Japan had invaded China in 1935.  Japan invaded Manchuria in 1931.  Pick any of these dates.  They lead directly into the Attack on Pearl. (Most historians ignore Japan entirely and use the attack on Poland as the starting date of World War II.)

+ America was totally unprepared for the the war.  -- America was gearing up for war at the time of her entry into World War II.  During the Great War she had produced practically no major materials for the war; not planes, nor guns, nor tanks.  World War II was to be different.  Aircraft: In the years between 1935 and the invasion of Poland, the following aircraft were created. (based on first flight, indicating that money had been appropriated, design had been completed and at least one aircraft had been built. This list does not including aircraft that flew but didn't make it into Production.
